Shi Hao Yang
Three year old Shi Hao Yang had heart surgery 12/2/15 and was discharged on 12/11 from Xijing Hospital in China. Follow-up reports indicate that the surgery was a success, and that Shi Hao Yang is recovering well and improving daily.
Shi Hao Yang’s home is located in a mountainous area in Shaanxi province. His family members include his parents, his grandparents, and his seven year old sister.
His family has only a little land to plant corn and potatoes. The yearly income from their crops is less than $100 (US dollars). His parents raise a pig and some chickens in order to make more money. They make about $500 (US dollars) selling pigs, chickens and eggs. His father climbs the mountain to find Chinese herbs and sells them to make about $650 (US dollars).
After Shi Hao was born, he was weak and got sick very often. His family has spent over $6,000 (US dollars) for medical treatments in his hometown and a local city. Several months ago, his father had an accident and lost two fingers when working a temporary job. It cost the family about $5,000 (US dollars) for treatment.
Shi Hao’s father contacted us asking us to help provide his son’s surgery. He told us he borrowed what he could, but the money was not enough to pay the surgery. If we didn’t help, he did not know what else to do to save his son’s life. Shi Hao’s heart condition has been getting worse because he did not have the open-heart surgery earlier.
After his diagnosis, his surgeon recommended two surgeries to repair his heart. The first one is a Central Aorta-Pulmonary Shunt. After this surgery, his pulmonary artery and left ventricle will grow and function properly, and subsequently it would possible to perform the second surgery with a lower risk. It would be very risky to have only one surgery to repair his heart because his heart condition is so severe. The chief surgeon of Division of Cardiovascular Surgery completed the surgery himself, because of the complexity of the surgery required.
We are grateful to have been able to help save this child’s life and give him a chance at a healthy fulfilled life. Please join us in changing the lives of more children around the world.
