Jie Cheng is a 15 year old girl who had heart surgery at Xijing Hospital in China on January 21st of 2016. She was released on January 23rd, and is recovering well.
Jie Cheng’s home is located in a very remote mountainous area in northwestern China. Her family has a lot of land to grow wheat and corn, but the productivity is extremely low because it rarely rains in the area. The whole area is often under a shortage of water and all the land there is terraced land. Her parents are in their fifties and as is typical of many farmers in China in that they didn’t receive a good education. She has an eight year old brother who attends the 1st grade (he is in the family photo wearing his school uniform). Because of their poverty, the family couldn’t afford the surgery she needed when Jie Cheng was younger. Now she is in high school and performing well in school. Her parents borrowed money from their relatives and with additional funding from the foundation, she was able to get the surgery she needed. The family hopes she can go back to school after Chinese New Year.
